Ethan Barno’s strikeout was a game-winner for St. Mary Catholic Central’s baseball team.
Barno was batting with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning when the third strike got past the Gibraltar Carlson catcher and Barno hustled to the first base as the winning run crossed the plate.
SMCC won 7-6.
Barno led the Falcons at the plate, going 2-for-5. he and Andrew Pope both stroked RBI singles in a three-run second inning.
Jaden Paquette earned the win, Tommy Rogoff and Calvin Bradley also pitched well in relief.
Carlson sent the game into extra innings with three runs in the top of the seventh. Liam Ferguson led the 1-3 Marauders with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Nathan Severinski had a two-run single in the seventh inning.
PREP BASEBALL
Miller leads Monroe
TECUMSEH – Noah Miller went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI to lead Monroe to a season-opening 8-3 victory over Ypsilanti Lincoln Monday.
Ashton Elmer went 2-for-4 with a double and dive in a run and Tristin Panza had a pair of RBI.
Ryan Sieler got the win, striking out 11 in 4 1/3 innings.Caleb Winkelman and Owen Yount finished up. Trojan pitchers struck out 16.
Whiteford gets first win
TECUMSEH – Shea Ruddy rapped out three hits as Whiteford topped Tecumseh 10-2 Monday to even its record at 1-1.
Logan Tammerine and winning pitcher Cole Giesige added two hits each. Both of Tammerine’s hits were doubles.

Whiteford wins two
TECUMSEH –Aly VanBrandt racked up five hits as Whiteford swept Tecumseh 10-1 and 8-0 Monday.
Berlynn Keller and Unity Nelson earned the pitching wins.
Keller and Anna VanBrandt finished with four hits each and Jillian Webb added three.
“Both teams were a little rusty coming off spring break, but we just kept chipping away and finally had a couple fall in,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said.
Bedford still perfect
ANN ARBOR – Aubrey Hensley is making it look easy for Bedford.
The freshman went 6-for-7 with a double, triple and grand slam home run, 9 RBI and 5 runs as the Mules moved to 6-0 with a 15-1, 12-1 sweep of Ann Abor Pioneer Monday. She has 17 RBI this season.
McKenna Dunlap (5-for-7 Monday) leads the team with a .722 average and Sydney Shammo (4-for-7) had a hefty .714 average.
Payton Pudlowski went 4-for-8 with 5 runs, 4 RBI and 2 triples. Nyah Mullins, Makayla Johnson and Camryn Pudlowski added three hits each.
Maddie Henegar (6-0) earned both wins.
“She’s doing a fabulous job for us in the circle and making big pitches when we really need them,” Bedford coach Marla Gooding said.
Dundee opens with split
MANCHESTER – Kennedy Irwin collected six hits as Dundee opened its season by splitting a doubleheader against Manchester Monday.
The Vikings won the first game 13-10 and dropped the second 6-1.
Emily Killion smacked 4 doubles in a row and walked 3 times. Other standouts were McKenna Salley (pitching win, 4 RBI), Kelsie Schmidt (3 hits, 3 RBI).
Freshman Kaylee Imo pitched well and Alyssa hit her first varsity home run.
“I thought we did some nice things and did some silly things,” said Dundee coach Mickey Moody, who picked up the 350th win over his career.

Bedford takes two
TEMPERANCE – Jack Decker and Andrew Kuebbeler delivered strong pitching as Bedford beat Ann Arbor Pioneer 9-0 and 15-0 Monday.
ace Bloomer, Josh Beauregard-Knittle and Jake Yeager led the offense.
SOCCER
Aliakbar scores three
Yousef Aliakbar scored three goals, including one with about a minute left in the game, to lift Athletico to an 8-8 tie with Team Rashford in the Monroe Adult Coed Indoor Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday night.
Hubeb Bello added two goals for the winners. Nate Cook had three goals and Sophie Mapes two for Rashford.
Monroe United starts well
The Monroe United travel teams opened the season during the weekend with three wins and a tie.
Elizabeth Klocek and Olivia Eby each had two goals.
The U-19 squad beat NPSA Crush 1-0, U-15 topped DCFC 9-5 and U-14 beat Chelsea 3-0 and tied Legacy 2-2.
