Hamilton prevailed 4-0 over Fennville in a home contest with two goals in half while limiting the visitors’ chances all evening.
Goal scorers for Hamilton were Mari DellaVecchia, Emily McDonald, Taylor Vanderzwaag, and Reagan Schut.
DellaVecchia and Cami Eding chipped in with assists. Bailey Gauthier was in the net for the shutout.
The Hawkeyes are now 4-1-2 on the season.
GIRLS SOCCER
Muskegon Catholic 5, Black River 1
The short-handed Black River team took a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes to go in the first half on an unassisted Ella Sligh goal. Muskegon Catholic scored five straight goals against a short bench for the River Rats. Olivia Hayes played great in goal making 12 saves.
Saugatuck 10, Comstock 2
Saugatuck defeated Comstock 10-2 on Friday night. Kennedy Gustafson led the attack with four goals, with Iris Kuipers adding two more. Erin Moerler, Eva Kierzek, Maddie Klein, and Adele Nieuwsma each scored one to round out the goal scoring. Recording assists for the Trailblazers were Kuipers (2), Moerler (2), Gustafson, Alyvia Downer, and Maeve Wrenn. Grace Greenwood and Dayna Crough stopped two shots in the net in the win.
Saugatuck improves to 6-2-2 on the season with the win.
SOFTBALL
Hamilton sweeps Joe
The Hawkeyes earned two wins over a non-conferencing opponent on Friday. Hamilton earned a 5-0 win in the first contest behind a stellar pitching performance from Madie Jamrog.
The junior tossed all seven innings, allowing six hits and six strikeouts. She also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run.
The second game went to extra innings, but the Hawkeyes came out with a 5-3 win in eight frames. Kianna Vork got the win in the circle tossing seven innings and getting five strikeouts. Jamrog came in to earn the save in the final inning. Raya VanderZwag led the offense in the second game, going 2-for-4, with three RBIs and a double.
“We earned a quality sweep of a good non-conference opponent today. In game one, Madie Jamrog was very, very good while pitching a five-hit shut out. In game two, Kianna Vork had another quality start with seven innings of three -run ball, “said Hamilton coach Mark Behnke. “This was our first extra inning game. We continue to grow and learn while trying to become what we will be as a team. We look forward to being back in action next week when we travel to Fruitport on Tuesday.”
Grandville 3, Zeeland West 0
The Dux fell in a tough game where the only scoring came on one swing of the bat, the Grandville three-run home run.
Sophomore Alexa Brott threw four scoreless innings and gave up two hits and had seven striekouts. Emily Kragt led the Dux offensively with three hits while Maddy Wyckoff added two more.
BASEBALL
Black River 8, Ottawa Hills 1
The Black River defeated Ottawa Hills 1-8 on Friday. Jack Davis pitched a complete game giving up three hits while striking out 14 and walking one.
The offense was led by Nick Wreschinsky going 2-for-2 and Elliott Gronevelt getting two hits as well.
TRACK AND FIELD
Saugatuck wins Kent City Invite
Saugatuck won the Kent City Elite Invite. It was truly a record-breaking day for Benny Diaz. Benny broke four meet records: 110-meter hurdles (14.16), 100-meter dash (10.93), 300-meter hurdles (39.66 and the 200-meter dash.
The two hurdle events were previously held by Saugatuck star alumni Blake Dunn (110s) and Brad Dunn (300s). The 100 meter was held by Caleb Schutte of Calvin Christian (a former State Champion in the 100) and Giovanni Weeks a former 200-meter state champion.
Diaz also broke the school record in the 200 meter with his time of 21.57. Senior Kurtis Bronze also broke the old 200-meter meet record and became the second-fastest Saugatuck runner ever in that event. Senior Adam Martinson won the Elite 1600 meters.
