Kerala: Kuttiady in tears as it bids farewell to basketball player Lithara | Kozhikode News

KOZHIKODE: Kerala basketball player Lithara KC (23), who committed suicide at her flat in Patna on Tuesday, was given a tearful farewell at her house in Vattoli near Kuttiady late on Thursday night. The body, which was brought to Karipur Airport, was received by Kunnummal grama panchayat vice president V Vijilesh at 9pm.
Meanwhile, her relatives have written to CM Pinarayi Vijayan as well as Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar seeking a thorough investigation into her death. Her relatives alleged that Lithara, who was working in East Central Railways, had been facing constant mental harassment from her coach. Kuttiady MLA KP Kunhammed Kutty said that according to the relatives of Lithara she was constantly facing harassment from her coach. “Also, they said that the autopsy was held even before the relatives reached there. Her friends and colleagues have given a written complaint to the police in Patna against the coach and it is learned that the police have begun a probe,” he said. Kunhammed Kutty said that the relatives have written to Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan seeking his intervention for a thorough investigation.
“Lithara had called her mother and told about the mental harassment she had been facing from the coach. There are also reports that during a camp, the coach had grabbedher hand and she had reacted then,” said Vijilesh V, a neighbor of Lithara.
He added that the family had also received information following the issues, the coach is learned to have complained to the department that Lithara was not attending coaching sessions.
Lithara was a member of the Kerala team that won the 32nd Federation Cup national basketball championship defeating Tamil Nadu in 2018.
Lithara began her basketball journey from the Kannur Sports Division before making her mark at state and university levels. She was compelled to take up a job at East Central Railways due to financial constraints.
