Missouri Department of Conservation elk- and bear-hunting permit applications open to Missouri hunters on Sunday, May 1.
According to a news release from MDC, five permits to hunt bull elk and 400 permits for a maximum of 40 black bears this fall will be offered.
The application period for both permits is May 1-31. All permits will be assigned through a random drawing. Missouri residents must be at least 11 years old by the first day of the hunting season they apply for.
Elk-hunting season: Archery portion Oct. 15-23, firearms portion Dec. 10-18.
Of the five permits to hunt bull elk this fall, at least one permit will be allocated for qualifying area landowners. The remaining will be available for the general public.
MDC will require a $ 10 application fee for each elk-hunting permit. Those selected will have the opportunity to purchase a $ 50 permit. Elk-hunting permits allow hunters on public or private property in Carter, Reynolds and Shannon counties.
Hunting methods for both archery and firearms will be the same as for deer hunting. Elk-hunting permits will allow for the harvest of one bull elk with at least one antler six inches or greater in length.
Black bear-hunting season: Archery and firearms portion Oct. 17-26
Ten percent of the 400 total bear permits will be allocated for qualifying area landowners.
The application fee for bear-hunting permits is $ 10. Those selected will be eligible to purchase a Black Bear Management Zone-specific permit for $ 25.

There are three Black Bear Management Zones, established by MDC in the southern half of Missouri. Permit numbers and harvest quotas will be issued for each zone. Permits allow hunters on public or private property within the designated zone.
Applicants must select one of these three zones:
- Black Bear Management Zone 1: Permit quota of 200 issued with a harvest quota of 20 bears
- Black Bear Management Zone 2: Permit quota of 150 issued with a harvest quota of 15 bears
- Black Bear Management Zone 3: Permit quota of 50 issued with a harvest quota of 5 bears
If a zone’s harvest quota is reached for the season, that zone will be closed.
Per MDC guidelines, hunting hours will be a half-hour before sunrise and a half-hour after sunset. Hunters must call MDC at 800-668-4045 prior to hunting each day to determine if their Black Bear Management Zone is still open for the season.
Archery and firearms are allowed for the full bear-hunting season, with allowable methods the same as those for deer and elk. The use of atlatls, baiting and dogs are not allowed.
The harvest limit is one bear per permit. The MDC reminds hunters that only lone black bears may be taken. Bears in the presence of others, such as a female black bear with cubs, cannot be taken. Bear dens should not be disturbed.
To apply for elk- or bear-hunting permits, visit mdc.mo.gov/buypermits, access MDC’s MO Hunting app or call 800-392-4115. Results of each drawing will be available online July 1.
