No. 19 USC Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 15 UCLA 4-3

The No. 19 USC women’s tennis team recorded a 4-3 victory to upset No. Marks Stadium at 15 UCLA on Friday (April 15). The Women of Troy improved to 17-10 (7-3) with today’s win.

Today’s win marked the seventh consecutive victory for USC and the first time the Trojans have beaten the Bruins since a conference match in 2017.

Trojan seniors honored with a celebration honoring the afternoon opened by The Troy of Women Danielle Willson and Salma Ewing. With clear skies overhead and a packed Marks Stadium, the No. 19 Women of Troy got to work in doubles, with USC’s Naomi Cheong and Grace Piper defeating the number 56 ranked Bruin duo of Catanzarit / Forbes 6-4 on court two. USC’s Danielle Willson and Snow Han UCLA’s Vagramov / Hance 7-6 (6) on Court Three to Fight Even on the Field. With the doubles point still up for grabs, it came down to a thriller on center court between USC’s Eryn Cayetano/ Salma Ewing and UCLA’s No. 49 ranked Bolton / Wagle. Cayetano and Ewing would eventually play singles into a one-point advantage moving to a 7-6 (7) victory over USC for the point in the haul.

USC carried their momentum into singles play, with the Trojans claiming the first set of five out of six courts. Trojan # 73 Naomi Cheong struck first, downing UCLA’s Elise Wagle 6-1, 6-3 on court five to extend the Trojans’ lead. Redshirt sophomore # 98 Snow Han followed by a 6-3, 6-0 victory on court five to make the score 3-1 USC. With the Trojans one point away from clinching the match, the Bruins hit a hot streak, claiming three straight matches even at the score of 3-3. Grace Piper fell 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 to No. 120 Kimmi Hance (UCLA) on court shortly before senior Danielle Willson fell to UCLA’s Vanessa Ong 7-6 (2), 7-5 on Court Six. With two courts still undecided, UCLA’s no. USC’s No. 2 win over the Elysia Bolton Evened with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win. 6 rank Eryn Cayetano. With five matches decided and the score tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to center court. During her senior day, the No. 42 rank Salma Ewing She would fight her ability to “Fight On,” with her final defending Bruin # 28 to win the Abigail Forbes 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to USC.

Next up, USC will hit the road for the 2022 Pac-12 Women’s Tennis Championships beginning Wednesday (April 20) in Ojai, Calif.
