Pine River Bucks basketball star to play for Alma women’s basketball team

LEROY – Hailey Wanstead has concluded a standout career at Pine River and is now embarking on a collegiate basketball career which will take her to Alma College.

Wanstead recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Alma.

“I liked the campus and the pre-physical therapy (offering) that I wanted to study,” Wanstead said. “It was between Olivet and Alma. But I like the campus way more at Alma. ”

She earned second team Pioneer Dream Team honors and All-Highland Conference first team accolodes by averaging 14.3 points, three assists, eight rebounds and three steals per game.

The Alma program “was pretty successful this year,” Wanstead said. “They only had three seniors leaving.”

Wanstead indicated Alma told her she would be geared toward being a shooting guard. It’s somewhat similar to the role she played at Pine River.

“This year I had to play a small forward at Pine River,” Wanstead said. “Shooting guard is definitely a better position for me.”
