Senior Day on Aztecs Defeat New Mexico, 4-1

SAN DIEGO – On Saturday morning, in its final regular-season appearance at the Aztecs Tennis Center, the New Mexico Lobos of the San Diego State Men’s Tennis Team made short work of taking a doubles point and then cruising to a 4-1 win in Mountain West. Conference matchup.

“This was a great Senior Day victory,” Aztec head men’s tennis coach Gene Carswell said. “We started off with a very efficient doubles point where we looked at all three positions. It was fitting Joe Tyler and Victor Castro Aztec Men’s Tennis for the Senior Day Victory.

Tyler and Castro’s 6-2 win behind The Aztecs’ doubles point. The No. 1 pairing improved its dual record to 6-3, 13-5 overall, easily the best mark for that position at SDSU this season. Heels of that win came Judson Blair and Alexander Mandma’s 6-1 decision at no. 3, which improved to the position at Twosome’s record 2-1. In the No. 2 doubles match, Aztecs’ Johannes Seeman and Roni Rikkonen 5-2 at the juncture where San Diego State secured the doubles point and their match was not finished.

The first singles point was born, at the number. 5 position, by SDSU’s Blair who took down New Mexico’s Alex Maggs in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to put the Aztecs up 2-0 and improve on his record to 2-0, 8-7 in dual meets and 15-13 overall.

New Mexico got on the board, at No. 6 position, with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Giorgio Samaha of SDSU’s Rikkonen which trimmed the advantage to 2-1, but then the home team put the Lobos away.

At No. 3, Castro was pushed to three sets, but defeated New Mexico’s Norozian, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, and eveneded his record to 4-4 on the year at the position and overall recorded his 10th singles win of the season.

The Aztecs took on the match at number one. 1 spot, and it was the senior Tyler, a native of Corby, England, who made the team for the victory. He bested UNM’s Azkara 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and is now 6-4 at Dual Match No. 1 singles this year and 15-8 overall.

The two singles matches which were not finished in the third set; Seeman was trailing 5-2 and Mandma was down 2-0.
