By Aaron Humes: Action continued on Saturday in week three of the Sprite “Live Life” Youth Basketball Tournament 2022 at the Buttonwood Bay Basketball Court.

Six games were played. Ebony Lake defeated Team Don One 41-32; Heights Camp knocked off Freetown Hitters 23-18; Hattieville Underdogs came up winners over Complex Titans by 51 to 46; Ladyville Big Dreams ran out 48-31 over Westmohland Elite; Southside Warriors edged Unruly Boyz 38-36; and Hard Rock took down Kraal Road 40-25.

But as police reminded in a Facebook post, the scores are not the most important thing about this tournament: “We saw rival teams, rival gang members hanging out together peacefully, reasoning with each other, communicating with each other positively. We also saw, heart & soul competitiveness, sportsmanship, leadership & controlled discipline behaviors displayed on and off the Buttonwood Bay basketball court. For these past three weeks of this Sprite “Live Life” Youth Basketball Tournament 2022, 15 teams from Belize District, over 140+ young males, ages 19 years & above, have decided to choose to shoot basketballs & compete against each and not shoot guns. at each other, but most importantly, they choose to “LIVE LIFE” positively. Respect all the teams and the young males in this multi-sectoral violence intervention initiative. “

Next week’s action moves to Hattieville village beginning at 9:30 am Saturday, May 28.

The Department wishes to thank Ministers Kareem Musa, Rodwell Ferguson and Dolores Balderamos-Garcia and sponsors and partners Leadership Intervention Unit and Sprite (Bowen and Bowen Limited), Department of Youth Services, Community Rehab Department, National Sports Council, Belize City Council and the Police’s Community Policing Unit and regular ranks for security at the games.
