IRVING, Texas – The University of Texas had a league-best four selections for the 2022 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship All-Tournament Team, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Sophomores Peyton Stearns, Kylie Collins and Charlotte Chavatipon and freshman Vivian Ovrootsky All earned spots in singles, and Collins and Chavatipon also garnered the accolade as a pair of doubles.
Fort Worth, the three-day event at the UT won the team title, against the earning victories. 34 Quarterfinals at Iowa State (4-0), no. 11 Semifinals and No. 11 Oklahoma State (4-1). 2 Final in Oklahoma (4-2). Texas has now acquired the Big 12 Tournament Crown in a total of 12 times (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2018, 2021 and 2022), with the last three coming under the current head coach. Stearns, who also received the honor of the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performance on Sunday, was named Hon. 1 dominant straight-set victories of a trio with singles. She claimed a 6-4, 6-0 win against No. 61 Thesaporn Naklo of Iowa State Friday’s Quarterfinals. The Stearns added a 6-0, 6-1 victory over No. 3. No. 19 Lisa Marie Rioux of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals and followed up with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. 10 Sunday’s final at Layne Sleeth of Oklahoma.
Collins received the award at no. 2 singles, as she recorded a spot at the 2-0 mark. She posted a 7-5, 6-2 win against No. 95 Ange Oby Kajuru of Iowa State at Friday’s Quarterfinals and added a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 1 Sunday’s championship match at 50 Carmen Corley in Oklahoma.
Chavatipon claimed the honor at no. 4 singles, as she registered a position at the 2-0 mark. She tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Oona Orpana of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals and added a 6-4, 6-1 win over Dana Guzman of Oklahoma in Sunday’s final.
Ovrootsky garnered the accolade at No. 6 singles, as she posted a 2-0 mark at the spot. She won a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sofia Cabezas of Iowa State in Friday’s quarterfinals and added a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ayumi Miyamoto of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals.
The tandem of Kylie Collins and Charlotte Chavatipon received at the Hon. 2 doubles, as they registered a perfect 3-0 mark at the position. The duo earned a 7-5 victory over Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas of Iowa State in Friday’s quarterfinals. A 6-0 win over Collins and Chavatipon followed. 75-ranked pair of Mhai Sawangkaew and Martina Zerulo of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals and record a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisavera of Oklahoma in Sunday’s championship match.
No. 4 Texas (20-4) will learn to draw in its next Division I selection show during the 2022 NCAA Championship Monday, May 2. The show will be streamed online at www.NCAA.com beginning at 5:30 pm Central.
