USFL scores, updates: Live results, analysis for Sunday games of opening weekend

The wait is over as the USFL got off the ground Saturday in thrilling fashion, the Birmingham Stallions rallying for a 28-24 victory over the New Jersey Generals and a 1-0 start to the season. As the page turned to Sunday, the Houston Gamblers and Michigan Panthers played the first game of a league tripleheader, a matchup that rivaled Saturday’s opener for excitement.

The Panthers were taken to the woodshed in the first half, turnovers being their undoing – fumbles by Shea Patterson and former NFL first-round pick Paxton Lynch and an interception by Lynch. But Jeff Fisher’s Panthers mounted a comeback in the second half, and had a chance to pull out a victory. They held the Gamblers scoreless over the final two quarters, narrowly failing to rally from a 17-point deficit in a 17-12 loss that ended on Hail Mary’s attempt.

That play came after Patterson fumbled the snap but recovered, and then took an ill-advised sack on a critical second down – still having a chance to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. It was not to be, however, as the Gamblers avoided a catastrophic collapse by literal inches, marking yet another thriller in the inaugural USFL campaign.

With the NFL readying for the 2022 draft in Las Vegas and football fans thirsty for a viable spring league, the USFL is hoping it could become a mainstay in the lives of those who crave the gridiron and don’t want an offseason from it. If that’s you, and it’s likely to be, strap on your seatbelt. Up next comes the Philadelphia Stars against the New Orleans Breakers, and here’s a look at the scores so far:

Birmingham Stallions 28, New Jersey Generals 24
Houston Gamblers 17, Michigan Panthers 12 (final)
