Women’s Basketball Lands DePaul Transfer Sonya Morris

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Women’s Basketball head coach Vic Schaefer announced Monday the addition of transfer guard, Sonya Morris from DePaul.

A three-year starter and three-time All-Big East Conference honoree, Morris joins the Longhorns as a graduate transfer and will exercise her final season of NCAA eligibility.

Morris arrives on the Forty Acres with 1,668 points for her career, which ranks No. 9 in Blue Demons history. Her 193 career triples rank No. 8 in school history. She has also twice been named a finalist for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award.

The 5-foot-10 St. Louis, Mo., native started 30-of-33 games this past season for the Blue Demons and was tabbed an All-Big East First Team selection. She was the team’s second-leading scorer and ranked No.4 in the league averaging 17.6 points per game while shooting 46.4 percent from the floor and 34.7 percent from behind the arc.

During the 2020-21 season, Morris was named to the All-Big East First Team while leading the team and ranking No. 3 in the conference in scoring averaging 19.3 points per game. She also ranked No. 3 in the league in three-point shooting with a 36.0 percent mark from behind the arc and ranked No. 11 in the NCAA with an 85.2 percent mark from the charity stripe.

Morris was named to the All-Big East Third Team as a sophomore in 2019-20. She averaged 15.6 points, led the Big East in steals with 75 and was the recipient of the leagues’ Most Improved Player Award.

As a freshman in 2018-19, Morris appeared in all 34 games for DePaul and averaged 4.9 points in 14.5 minutes per game off the bench.

During her prep career, Morris was named Miss Missouri Basketball during her senior season. She averaged 13.7 points. 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals throughout her career and helped lead Incarnate Word to three state titles.

Daughter of Terron and Kawanda, Jones has two sisters, Nakayla and Zoey and a brother, Mark.
